Club legend Frank Lampard’s Chelsea will travel to Old Trafford to take on another club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United in the headline clash of the upcoming Premier League weekend.
Both teams have blown hot and cold so far this season, and look nowhere near their best to stake a genuine claim for the Premier League crown. While Manchester United have taken four games to win two games in the league, Chelsea have taken five games for the same, drawing two and losing the crucial game against the reigning champions Liverpool.
Chelsea have invested heavily in recruits for this season, bringing in quality names like Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Ben Chilwell, Edouard Mendy, and most significantly a leader at the back in the form of Thiago Silva. These players are still taking time to settle in, with only Chilwell having played in the Premier League before, but Lampard will be pleased with Chilwell and Silva’s performance in the Champions League mid-week, putting up a solid defensive display to earn a goalless draw against Europa League holders Sevilla.
Manchester United, meanwhile, had a disastrous start to the season, losing by two goals to Crystal Palace on the opening day before catastrophe struck in the form of Jose Mourinho’s Spurs, who thrashed the Red Devils 6–1 at Old Trafford. The fallout was out in the open, with Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire arguing multiple times on the pitch. Manchester United have since then responded in the most positive fashion, comfortably beating Newcastle United, before an even more impressive win over PSG in the Champions League. Incidentally, Bruno Fernandes was given the armband for the clash at Paris by Solskjaer, the Portuguese showing leadership qualities in just his first year at this massive club.
On the team news front, Lampard virtually has an entire squad to choose from, with only young midfielder Billy Gilmour missing out with a knee injury. Solskjaer will be without the services of Eric Bailly, who has managed to get himself injured yet again in an injury-laden career at United, while Anthony Martial will serve the second of his three-match ban after receiving a red card in the aforementioned Spurs game. Star signing Edinson Cavani could make his United bow in place of Martial.
We have a competitive encounter in store for us, where both teams will refuse to give an inch to the opponent. To join in the fun, and engage in some quality, friendly banter, the Football Fan App has created an exclusive Banter Room for the fans of Manchester United and Chelsea. Do join in!
